Butter is Better Bakery & Restaurant is a place on Chang Klan road that brings you back into times when the series of “Happy Days” were still on TV. Only in this episode, it will be with friendly Thai staff instead of Fonzy! Needless to say, the service has always been very nice and the (mostly homemade) food really delicious. It probably has the largest variety of American food in Chiang Mai on the menu such as club sandwiches, pancakes, chili hot dogs and hamburgers. There are plenty of cakes and chocolate puddings, also a full range of tasty milkshakes, fresh coffees and teas. It’s the ideal place for a breakfast or late lunch when it gets hot and you like to enjoy a cool breeze while eating.

How a Thai became interested in American food specialties

Dao is the owner and chief of Butter is Better bakery. He has been baking European and American style foods for the last 20 years. But when he met his mother-in-law and saw her baking skills, he apparently realized he still had a lot to learn. He became a helping hand and good student to improve his own skills and now makes all the pies and dishes with the approval of the teacher herself!

Visitors from the United States will find a few homely things on the menu here that are hard to find in Chiang Mai. There’s BBQ pulled pork “with all the fixings” and corned beef hash or even Boston baked beans. All homemade at very reasonable prices. Butter is Better restaurant is definitely worth a visit. It is the only place offering real American food in Chiang Mai.
